Boxonlucy goes back to back at Belmont

Aug 16, 2017

SJ Wolfe Racing's in-form mare Boxonlucy continued her rise through the ranks with a second straight Belmont midweek victory in today's Rentokil Initial Handicap (Race 7-1400m).

With the cutaway rail in play, stable jockey Shaun McGruddy rode the Dick Turpin four-year-old to perfection, taking the sit on the leader's heels in running before gaining an inside passage at the top of the straight. With the whip in the left hand, McGruddy asked Boxonlucy for the supreme effort and she responded over the final 300 metres, fending off all comers to salute by a three-quarter length.

The home-bred Boxonlucy, who is out of Team Wolfe's former open-class racemare Lovely Lucy, backed up her fighting August 2 triumph with a similar courageous performance at Belmont this afternoon when continuing to fight despite appearing set to be overrun by the swoopers.

Now a 62-rater, Boxonlucy appears likely to be tested in Graduation Handicap company at a Belmont Saturday meeting in the next two to three weeks. And after two wins and a second from three starts this preparation, she certainly deserves an opportunity to compete at that level.
