Team Wolfe dominates with Albany treble

Dec 01, 2017

After a luckless opening day at Albany on November 19, SJ Wolfe Racing bounced back hard on their home deck today by combining with long-time stable jockey Shaun McGruddy to win three of the seven races on offer.

Saddling up a big squad of 15 runners, Team Wolfe went home with three wins, three seconds and three thirds, with Truly Rare (pictured), Jester Rock and Mass Effect all saluting the judge.

Former Peters Investments four-year-old Truly Rare, who was snapped up at a mid-year dispersal sale, claimed her first victory for her new connections in the Austral Bricks Maiden (Race 2-1230m) courtesy of an aggressive McGruddy ride. The daughter of Nicconi kicked clear at the top of the straight and held on gamely, with stablemate Go Crying among a number of horses closing late.

Honest campaigner Jester Rock is well into his seven-year-old season but has rarely raced better, enjoying a perfect run in transit and charging down the better section (outer half) of the straight to take out the Laminex Handicap (Race 4-1612m) ears pricked. Accounting for stablemate Mr PagoJester Rock has been a terrific competitor for the 'Wolfe Gang' in recent seasons and his seventh victory from 41 starts pushed him beyond the $100,000 mark in total earnings.

Progressive four-year-old Mass Effect capped off the winning hat-trick with a wholehearted victory under 60kg in the WA Country Builders Handicap (Race 5-1612m). Landing in the three-wide line from barrier 11, McGruddy again used his initiative to put the son of Danehill Express into the race, improving to be sharing the lead swinging for home. It proved a masterstroke as the talented customer lengthened with momentum and held his rivals at bay to win by a long neck. It was the performance of a galloper destined for better things.
