Master Albany trainer Steve Wolfe will be recognised on Thursday for another wonderful season in the Great Southern.
Wolfe has enjoyed a successful 2021-22 season on his home turf, training 28 winners to stitch up yet another Great Southern trainers’ premiership.
The Great Southern racing awards will be presented on Thursday night.
The latest victory adds to Wolfe’s incredible run with the award, having now claimed 24 of the past 29 titles.
Wolfe turns 74 on Thursday and has trained 49 winners so far in WA this season, including 12 metropolitan victories, and says he is still extremely passionate about the racing game.
“As long as I’ve got good staff around me, I’ll keep going,” Wolfe said.
“I love the industry, I love sport and people in general.
“My passion will never wane.
“Whether it’s winning a race in Pingrup or in Perth, it doesn’t matter for me, it’s about that satisfaction you see on an owner’s face — it’s a wonderful feeling.”
Albany jockey Natasha Faithfull will be recognised on Thursday as the rider of the year, and has ridden a host of winners for Wolfe, to whom she was an apprentice.
Wolfe said Faithfull was a big part of his successful local season.
“The most satisfying thing is that Tash won the jockey’s title,” Wolfe said.
“That means more to me so it’s been great to give her that support.
“The name of the game is to be successful at the highest level.
“We’ve done it for 30 years here, started good horses, and Albany is a great launching pad. You can win races in Albany but you have to go and buy yearlings to get to that next level.
“I have wonderful staff — Joy Lucas, Tamara Playle, Kim Porter and Stephen Sheehy and the rest of the team. The loyalty from those people helps me get the job done.”
The awards will be announced at Motel Le Grande on Thursday night.
