It was heart-in-mouth stiff from well-regarded four-year-old Currimundi, but stable jockey timed his move to perfection when getting his nose in front right on the finish line to claim the Samantha Ellis and Maureen Axon Memorial Handicap (1400m) at Pinjarra today.
The younger half-brother and stablemate of The Spruiker was an unlucky fourth when kicking off his campaign at Belmont on July 20, and as a result was sent out a heavily-commissioned $2.10 favourite this afternoon.
And while he did make his supporters sweat, the performance to win was significant considering how wide he was forced on the turn and how amount of ground was required to overhaul the second-placed Oh Sophia.
Currimundi is still developing physically and learning his craft, but there’s certainly an engine under the hood and he’s a thoroughbred with a rather bright future.
